First Aid For Burst Pipes

2/22/2012 10:45:00 AM
Burst pipes that flood homes cause property damage in Indiana each year. Indiana home insurance may compensate homeowners for losses resulting from water damage that occurs in this manner, but it’s important to do everything you can to avoid pipes freezing and to limit the damage that’s caused if they burst.

Although a water pipe may be frozen, it’s not inevitable that it will burst. Call a plumber immediately if no water comes out when you turn on a faucet and you suspect that you have a frozen pipe on your hands. Leave the faucet turned on while you wait for the plumber to arrive.

We don’t recommend attempting to thaw frozen pipes yourself. Applying heat with an open flame is a fire hazard, and using an electrical appliance like a hair dryer to warm a frozen water pipe risks electric shock or worse, so it’s much better to wait for expert help from a plumbing professional.

Finding a flood in your home after a water pipe has burst can be alarming, but it’s important to try to stay calm and safe. The first thing you must do is turn off the water supply at the shutoff valve, to stop the flood increasing and causing more damage.  Having closed the water shutoff valve, call a plumber to come and replace the burst pipe.

Don’t risk electric shock by going into a flooded room, or trying to access the electrical box if your clothes or hands are wet or there is water on the floor. Assess the extent of water damage and call your Indiana home insurance agent to report what has happened and commence a claim if necessary.
